Valentine’s Day by numbers: How do UK OpenTable diners celebrate

Fun fact: At OpenTable, Valentine’s Day is our most booked day of the year — so we know how important it is for restaurants. We took a look at last year’s diner behaviour for this oh-so-romantic occasion to gather some valuable insight on how people celebrate and the patterns we see occurring.

With diners coming out in their masses to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it seems that Brits are not only big foodies but also love to try out new restaurants. Our data shows that 86% of Valentine’s Day reservations made last year were booked by first time diners to their restaurant of choice.

Take this as you will, but from our next stat we would like to think we are becoming more and more romantic (or possibly better organised). In 2015, the first Valentine’s Day reservation was made seven months in advance of the big day, compared to 2016 when the first reservation came in nine months in advance, on 9 June 2015 at 23:30 to be exact. Now that’s what we call commitment!

Whilst some of our diners may like to plan far in advance, others remain less organised. On average, diners in the UK make their Valentine’s Day reservations 12 days in advance, with a staggering 53% of Valentine’s Day reservations being made the week leading up to the day itself. Taking that further still, we can see that 13 Feb is the most popular day for booking a romantic dinner.

Taking all this into account it would seem pertinent for restaurateurs to plan as far in advance as possible for Valentine’s Day to ensure to capture the attention of future early bird romantics as well as new spontaneous diners.

Combing through our data we can see that British cuisine comes up top for Valentine’s Day dining. With Italian, Steak restaurants and French cuisines also proving to be popular romantic fayre.
