Mums would rather dine out than be treated to their children’s cooking

Going out for a meal is a mum’s favourite thing to do on Mother’s Day

There’s nothing more heartwarming than a homemade gift from your child… unless it involves their questionable culinary efforts according to new found research from OpenTable.

Mums love when their children go the extra mile to show their appreciation on Mother’s Day however, when it comes celebrating this special day being taken our for a meal is their favourite thing to do rather than having to sample their children’s ad hoc recipes.

Luckily for mum it seems that receiving a home cooked meal from their little one isn’t that likely as astonishing two thirds (65%) of mums admit they have never been treated to a home cooked meal by their children on Mother’s Day. Additionally, a third of parents (33%) claim their kids have never cooked for them, ever!

Mums in the West Midlands are the most likely to receive a cooked meal from their children with almost half (48%) saying they have been made a meal by their offspring, whereas only a quarter (27%) North East have.

When deciding where to take your mum out for Mother’s Day, your best bet is to go somewhere with a roast dinner on the menu as the British classic tops the tables as mum’s meal of choice on Mother’s Day, with Afternoon Tea coming in a close second.

To answer the ongoing debate of whether mum or dad is the favourite parent could possibly be derived from who gets treated the most on their special day. All evidence points towards mum as families are five times are likely to dine out on Mother’s Day than they are on Father’s Day. One in four children treat both parents out to a meal on their respective days.

Adrian Valeriano, Vice President, Europe, OpenTable, comments, “We at OpenTable believe that mothers should be celebrated all year round, but Mother’s Day is a great time to get the whole family around the restaurant table. We definitely advocate for leaving the culinary creations to the experts and with hundreds of fantastic restaurants to choose from there’s no excuse to not take your mother out this year.”
